How To Know If You Need To Repair Or Replace Your Toilet

We all know the old saying “If it isn’t broke don’t fix it.” But often, we are faced with the dilemma of whether something should be repaired or replaced. It’s not worth replacing something when you can fix it. Toilets are a great example of this. Sometimes a repair will suffice, but other times, replacing the toilet is the best option financially.

We’ll be covering common issues in the toilet and explaining which ones are best to replace and which can be repaired.

Toilet is not flushing properly

It is possible for your toilet to not flush completely or it to stop flushing altogether. This can be fixed easily. The flapper or handle might need to be replaced. Sometimes, all you need to do is tighten the handle and adjust the length of your chain.

Regularly, the toilet clogs.

Your toilet may clog every few weeks or more frequently if it isn’t clearing out. If the plunge is not working, call a plumber to fix the problem. You won’t get any help from Drano or Liquid-Plumr here.

It may be time for a replacement if your toilet is very old (40+ years) and has clogs on a regular basis. Your toilet may have mineral buildup over the years that blocks waste and toilet paper.

A crack is present in the tank or bowl.

A plumber will usually repair a small crack in the bowl or tank with plumbing epoxy. Most plumbing experts recommend against repairing cracks that are more than 1/16 inches in diameter. Even if the plumber attempts to repair it, there is a significant risk that the repair will not work. You’ll need to deal with a large leak if the repair fails. Bottom line: A crack that is more than 1/16 inch wide should be replaced.

The toilet will not stop running.

The flapper’s chain might have caught on to something and is keeping your toilet running. To get the flapper to close again, jiggle the handle or open the tank. The problem is most likely fixed once the flapper closes, and the tank has filled with water.

If that doesn’t resolve the problem, you may need to adjust the length of the chain or replace the flapper. It is not necessary to replace the entire toilet.

The entire toilet tilts or wobbles.

A toilet can tilt or move for many reasons. Sometimes, the floor may be sagging. This is something you should investigate immediately. You might also need to replace the wax seal on your toilet or tighten its bolts.

Broken flanges can cause tilting of the toilet. The flange, a metal or plastic ring, is what is supposed to attach the toilet to the ground. It can be more expensive than replacing other components. You may save more money if you have an inefficient toilet. A WaterSense toilet requires less water to flush.
